How Does Dual Credit Compare with Advanced Placement?

There are advantages to both dual credit and advanced placement (AP) courses. Compare options to find the one that's the best fit for you.

Description Allows high school students to simultaneously earn college credit, while also earning credit at their high school. Allows students to take college-level courses and exams to earn college credit or placement while still in high school.
Credit Guaranteed college credit upon successful completion of course(s) in Texas. No guarantee upon completion of course(s); must pass College Board Exam AP exams with a score of 3 or higher.
Teachers / Instructors Taught by college instructors or high school teachers who serve as adjunct professors. Taught by the high school teachers trained by The College Board.
College / University Acceptance Accepted at public college and universities in Texas as well as many other colleges and universities across the nation. Check the policy at each college or university. Accepted throughout the nation. Check the policy at each college or university
Location Taught at the high school, online or at a TCC campus. Taught at the high school.
Eligibility
  • Must be identified as a high school student.
  • Must have high school approval.
  • Must meet TSI eligibility requirements for college-level course work.
Open to any student.
Cost $74 per credit hour (grant funds may be available) $93 test fee (waivers may be available)
