Program Description
Our program prepares you to code medical information for insurance purposes, teaches you about disease processes and trains you to use classification manuals.
Certification Exam Is Part of the Program
The certification examination is administered in the last class by an AAPC Representative. You must register for the certification examination directly with AAPC.
The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) is the nation's largest association of medical coders, billers, auditors and regulatory compliance experts–with more than 141,000 members. AAPC credentials are nationally recognized by physicians and clinical professionals as well as medical societies and government organizations across the country for their expertise in administering the business side of medicine.

This program prepares you for an occupational license. However, you may not be eligible for licensing if you have a prior criminal history.

Eligibility Requirements
- High School diploma or GED
- Passing score on The Adult Basic Education (TABE) test, if applicable
- Positive criminal background check (CBC) results

After successfully completing the course requirements, you will receive a TCC Institutional Award.
AAPC Certification
You can take a certification examination that is administered by an AAPC-endorsed site. Schedule your certification examination directly with AAPC.

How to Apply
- New TCC students only: Complete a CE enrollment form. If you have not previously attended TCC, contact the program director or career advisor for more information.
- Download, print, and fill out the application
- Gather the required supporting documents:
- A copy of your high school diploma or GED
- International high school diplomas must be evaluated for a U.S. equivalency by contacting International Academic Credential Evaluators, Inc.
- A copy of your high school diploma or GED
- Complete and pass the TSI—if you are not able to provide an official or unofficial transcript(s) for exemption review)
- Email your completed application and supporting documents to TR.HealthCareAdvising@tccd.edu.
- Register for class
- Once you have been accepted, you may register for Medical Coder courses.
