Our Program

Why Choose Chemistry?

  • Contribute to research & development that can improve people’s lives
  • Use sophisticated testing techniques, such as:
    • Chromatography
    • Spectroscopy
    • Physical or chemical separation techniques
  • Work as part of a team led by chemists & chemical engineers who manage projects & evaluate the work of team contributors
  • Help develop more efficient production processes for manufacturing
  • Be able to choose a specialization, for example:
    • Analytical Chemistry
    • Biochemistry
    • General chemistry
    • Organic or inorganic chemistry
    • Physical chemistry

Prepare for What You Will Do at Work

  • Think critically about different ways to solve problems
  • Analyze chemicals & other substances
  • Conduct chemical & physical experiments; interpret & document the results
  • Handle chemicals & dispose of them safely
  • Maintain laboratory equipment & instruments

Marketable Skills You Will Learn

  • Critical thinking
  • Reasoning
  • Communication
  • Personal & social responsibility
  • Teamwork
  • Computer literacy

Before You Enroll, Think About:

  • You will use both science & math in your work.
  • You will likely work in laboratories where you must follow proper procedures to avoid exposure to potentially harmful chemicals
  • Most chemical technicians work full time and may need to work extra hours occasionally, depending on experiment requirements or deadlines.
  • Personality traits important to chemical technicians include:
    • Attention to detail
    • Flexibility
    • Dependability
  • After earning your A.S. in Chemistry, you will have the first 2 years of the college curriculum you need to transfer to a university and complete a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.
