STEPS

 Our STEPS (Skills, Training & Enrichment for Promoting Success) Program helps adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities learn or refine their academic, social, life and career skills. Our goal is to prepare students for independent living and securing a job.

Quick Facts

  • Location: Northeast Campus
  • When: fall and spring semesters
  • Cost: $545-675 (may vary depending on the number of classes chosen.)

Eligibility

All students must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be able to travel to and from class independently or with an attendant.
  • Maintain appropriate behavior during unsupervised lunches and breaks or have an aide to supervise.
  • Demonstrate proper hygiene.
  • Not have a recent history of violent offenses.

Courses

Our courses are organized into 3 pathways:

  • Enrichment
  • Career/Entrepreneurship
  • College Readiness

Students may repeat any pathway. Certificates of completion are handed out once each course in a pathway is completed.

Enrichment Pathway

Our enrichment pathway focuses on:

  • Academic
  • Social
  • Self-advocacy
  • Independent living

Career/Entrepreneurship Pathway

Our career/entrepreneurship pathway focuses on the following:

  • Exploring careers, jobs, and internships
  • Improving social skills in the workplace
  • Turning hobbies and interests into money-makers

College Readiness Pathway

College Readiness will prepare students to attend college. Students will learn about:

  • College life
  • Study skills
  • Managing schedules

They will develop social skills to relate to peers, teachers, co-workers, and student organizations.

How to Apply and Register

Before you can register, complete the following:

  1. Meet with Lifestyle and Community Learning staff at the campus that you want to attend. We will review the courses in the program.
  2. Complete an admission interview.
  3. Review the registration process with one of our staff. (both student and parent)
  4. Bring a copy of your IEP. (if applicable)
  5. Gather funding sources.
  6. Visit a classroom in session. (optional)
