• Always follow safety procedures
• Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot diesel-powered equipment:
  • Brake systems
  • Electrical systems, particularly starters, alternators, and batteries
  • Steering and suspension systems
  • Power trains, including clutches, transmission, drive shafts, and differentials
• Perform basic preventative maintenance, including regular servicing and monitoring of major systems over time
• Use specialized tools to repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning

• You must enjoy learning because you will need to keep up with new materials, best practices, and technologies.

• Diesel service technicians often need to lift heavy parts, handle greasy equipment, and work in awkward positions.
• Problem-solving is a big part of the work: You will need to notice problems, identify the cause of errors, and figure out the best way to solve those problems or defects.
• The ability to hear the difference between sounds will help you solve diesel engine problems.
